Sgraffito: Whale PlateExplanation of the Sgraffito process:
Sgraffito starts with making a plate from the white clay. I used a mold to make a plate with a good shape. Then you paint the plate with black glaze paint. Then you take an image and trace it onto your work. Then you use a series of tools to scrape away the black paint and reveal the white clay underneath. What makes a successful Sgraffito? A successful Sgraffito has good, dark blacks and bright whites. This means that one must use several layers of black paint and they must go very slowly to scratch away the black so the lines are smooth. |
Inspiration:I created the image that I used for my sgraffito on photoshop. You can see the image to the left. I used a water pattern background and combined that with a silhouette of a whale in Antarctica. This was to give the impression that one was below the water looking at the whale. I was not very hard to carve out the coast line because if I made a small mistake, no one would notice.
